I get e-mails all the time from 8 man teams that want to know how my offense would be modified to fit into the 8 man game. I rarely try and offer advice on subjects that I have not had hands on in-depth experience with. A number of these 8 man coaches went forward with my offensive system and did quite well. The most common alingment was to go with a balanced 5 man line and eliminating the fullback or 2 back. They would pull the backside guard rather than playside guard on the plays that require pulling. Other than that they were for the most part able to run the entire playbook. I found invariably that nearly all these teams ended up making nearly the same adjustments to the system and did quite well.

The first play is the power sweep play. Every base play has an owner : a coach or an offensive lineman who is in the best position to make a call to vary the blocking scheme or even the point of attack. The power sweep 8 play is owned by the coach because the play attacks the flank and, in his experience, the coach is in the best position to make the adjustment. Each play will have just a single owner, and a given player or coach will own just a single play.
I like the simplicity and elegance of this approach. It also forces an economy of plays in the system but allows for multiplicity with the different blocking schemes.

When most people think of a balanced offense, they think of a relatively even percentage of yards gained rushing to yards gained passing. However, I think of this term in a different way. I think of a balanced offense as one that can give you the plays you need to get a first down or to win a game, regardless of the statistics involved. As a side note here, I will mention that last year the New England Patriots achieved a record number of victories in a row and won the Super Bowl although they ranked 27th in the NFL in yardage gained rushing.
When that team needed a running play, apparently they often chose one on which their players could do an efficient job.

The year before we put this offense in we went , THEN….. I always direct them to your book about the Single Wing as a place to start. I also had the good fortune to speak with and order materials from the great John Aldrich and Ken Keuffel.

Traditionally, the single-wing was an offensive formation that featured a core of four backs including a tailback, a fullback, a quarterback blocking back , and a wingback. Coach Courville was kind enough to send me a tape not only of the Bears’ highlights, but also of some of the treatment Gueydan’s great season received from local TV stations.
